Description The Convenience Industry Council of Canada (CICC), is seeking a Vice President, Communications & Stakeholder Relations. Reporting to the President and CEO of the CICC, the Vice President will support a strategic government, communications, and stakeholder relations program that advances the CICC's objectives and reputation. The person will be responsible for overseeing coordinated regional advocacy and communications efforts in the provinces, with assistance from a small team of consultants and/or staff on the ground in each region. The person will also provide analysis and strategic advice, planning, and coordinating activities at a federal level. This newly-created position is in response to the needs of the CICC to ensure an integrated and coordinated approach in advancing its agenda to protect the reputation and business interests of the industry. This means strategically identifying research and communications priorities to support established objectives as well as strong knowledge of the social media landscape and using it to reinforce the importance of the channel with government decision makers and media. The person will be responsible for fostering mutually beneficial working relationships with members and stakeholders and supporting CICC in their dealings with government, media and other partners so that interactions across all levels of government are strategic, coordinated and consistent. Key to this role is the ability to represent the CICC in various capacities thereby enabling the industry to advocate its interests effectively and thoughtfully.-- Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the President & CEO and regional advocacy agencies to ensure an integrated approach to identify, understand and communicate government related issues, in alignment with strategic priorities
  • Monitor and conduct research on relevant public policy, legislative, regulatory and political issues
  • Responsible for crafting and implementing a communications plan, including social media plan, to grow awareness of CICC and its issues with decision makers
  • Plan and/or coordinate meetings/briefings with members and key stakeholders, including logistical details for meetings, pre- and post-meeting strategy sessions, debriefs with participating executives and drafts summaries for internal use
  • Draft, and coordinate the approval of, correspondence, presentations, and formal policy submissions to federal and provincial governments
  • Work with the President & CEO to provide leadership and support on brand building campaigns
  • Develop and strengthens relationships with key decision makers and influencers in and outside of government
  • Take on special projects, such as research projects
  • Monitor publications and communications from government, organizations, researchers and the media
  • Work closely with the President & CEO on a key national program, National Convenience Week. This is a week where politicians and community leaders are invited into stores across the country and funds are raised for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Working Conditions:
    • This is a home-based contract position
    • The person will be responsible for maintaining their own workspace
    • The person will preferably be from the Toronto area
    • Ability to speak French is considered an asset
    • Travel within Canada is required-- Qualifications
      • Degree in Public Affairs, Communications, Political Science or in related field
      • Minimum of 10 years' communications/stakeholder relations experience growing an organization's reputation as a valued contributor to public policy
      • Knowledge of the convenience industry and/or association management is an asset
      • Excellent writing and public speaking skills
      • Experience creating and executing approved plans in communications and government relations
      • Ability to work independently; actively involved in all aspects of the job responsibilities
      • Proven track-record in provincial and federal government relations and/or communications
      • Experience presenting complex issues and opportunities to high-level officials and third-party partners
      • Experience working with business leaders and demonstrated business acumen
